OCR: Many human genetic diseases are caused by mutational blocks in metabolic pathways. This figure shows several of the steps involved in the metabolism of the amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine. Each of these metabolic steps is catalyzed by a different enzyme. Therefore, mutations that affect these enzymes will block the corresponding steps in the pathway. Explore the illustration to learn more about the biochemical basis of the different diseases caused by interruption of this metabolic pathway. As you can see, the phenotypic consequences of blocks at different points within the same pathway may vary drastically.
